Infection Control
The head of the Newborn and Premature Intensive Care Unit is very aware of infection control in the department and assigned one physician to be the coordinator who reports to the infection control nurse and works according to her recommendations.
Activity
About 4200 newborns are delivered every year at the Barzilai medical center, 800 of them need intensive care for prematurity or for complications during or after the delivery. More than fifty newborns are born under 1500 gm of weight. Following primary check-up immediately after birth, healthy babies are transferred to the nursery for 48-72 hours and then discharged home with their mothers.
We have 22 treatment sites, some with incubators, some for intensive care and ventilation, and some for intermediate treatment before discharge.
Newborns with birth problems or premature are transferred to the intensive care unit. The unit is equipped with the most modern newborn incubators, ventilators and monitoring systems. The medical and nurse staff is well trained to deal with all emergency situations of the newborn and the premature including quick intravenous access, intra-arterial lines and intercostal drainage.
All the newborns are examined for inborn errors, malformations, hearing evaluation and receive vaccinations according to the program of the Ministry of Health.
The nurse staff instructs the parents about newborn safety inside and outside the nursery, at home and check that the parents have safety seats in their cars before discharge.
The mortality rate of underweight premature (under 1500 gm) in the neonatal and premature intensive care unit at the Barzilai medical center is one with the lowest in Israel.
The goal of the staff is to provide warm environment to the parents and humane attitude to the newborn. Parents can stay with their babies as much time as they want. We strongly encourage the mothers for breast-feeding and dedicated well-trained nurse help and advise new mothers for breast-feeding.
We are well aware of the risk of exchanging babies and that is why the parents and the babies have bracelets on their hands /legs with the name of the mother. Parents are not allowed to take their babies outside the department without the permission and bracelet check by the attending nurse.
The mother can choose to keep the baby beside her all the time (rooming in method) or to keep him in the nursery and take him for breastfeeding only.
Academic Activity
The department is recognized by the Israel Medical Council for full residency in neonatal intensive medicine. The department is affiliated to the medical school of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev and students from the medical school do their rotations in the department.
