Innovative and experimental treatment in acute stroke
First in the country, innovative and experimental treatment of acute brain stroke at Barzilai Medical Center in the Neurology Department headed by Dr. Roni Milo.
The treatment is based on implanting a miniature neurostimulator near the sphenopalatine ganglion located in the roof of the upper jaw and for 5 days the neurostimulator is activated by a steady stream of electrical stimulation delivered from external energy source.
The procedure is believed to improve blood flow to the part of brain injured by stroke due to decreased blood supply, and consequently reduce the size cerebral infarct and the degree of the patient functional damage.
The technology and the device were developed by the Israeli company Brainstage and are now tested in advanced trials worldwide. As mentioned, the first procedure in Israel was performed at Barzilai Medical Center. The experimental treatment is provided by the physicians of the Neurology Department with the assistant of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery physicians at Barzilai Medical Center. It includes use of advanced and improved instrumentation of computerized navigation of neurostimulator implantation based on CT imaging and online internet communication between the implanting physician, the device and the control center of the research located in Caesarea, Israel.
