Activity of the endocrinology unit and clinic
The physicians of the endocrinology unit and clinic treat patients who have problems with their endocrine system, like problems of the thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal gland, pituitary gland and disorders of calcium and osteoporosis.
More than 4200 patients visit the clinic per year. Laboratory, endocrine and imaging test and biopsies are performed to complete the diagnosis.
Checking bone density and treating osteoporosis is also one the missions of the endocrine clinic. Keeping one's bone density is important to decrease the probablity of spontaneous fracture of the femoral neck. During the last year, more than 2200 bone density examinations were done at the Barzilai medical center. Morover, the medical staff of the orthopedic department has been cooperating since the year 2017 with the endocrine staff in a project for the patients who had fracture of the femoral neck due to osteoporosis.
Beside the project of preventing and treating osteoporosis, the endocrine staff is invoved also in the assessment and follow up of overweight patients who are scheduled to have all types of interventions for their obesity : gastric banding, percutaneous partial gastrectomy and other interventional procedures.
The Barzilai medical center is affiliated to the Ben Gurion school of medicine and the medical staff of the Barzilai endocrine clinic is involved in student teaching programs.
