Obstetric Anesthesia Unit

Head of the obstetric anesthesiology unit

Dr. Dovdovani Jacob

Location

Delivery department wing

The aim of the obstetric anesthesia is to reduce / eliminate the pain during the delivery of the baby using patient controlled analgesia (PCA). This procedure is performed by inserting a fine catheter to the epidural space and infusing anesthetic drugs. The pregnant woman can control the rate of the anesthetic drug infusion according to the level of her pain. The pregnant is awake and the delivery of the baby is painless. A specialized anesthesiologist performs the procedure.

When there is a need for an immediate cesarean section, the pregnant woman is transferred rapidly to the operating room. The operating room for cesarean sections is located close to the delivery department in order to shorten the time of transfer since the timing of beginning the cesarean section is crucial to prevent complications to the patient and the baby. The anesthesiologist decides whether to continue with epidural anesthesia or go over to general anesthesia.

After the cesarean section, the patient is transferred to the adjacent recovery room and the medical team continue to monitor her until she is transferred to the motherhood department with her newborn baby.
