Activity

 

The unit for fertility and in vivo fertilization at the Barzilai medical center has over 25 years of experience in treating men and women with fertility problems with great success. The fertility unit includes a fertility clinic, male fertility laboratory, laboratory for sperms and oocytes examination and an operating room for the process of artificial insemination and for return of fertilized oocytes (embryos). The whole process is ultrasound and/or endoscopic guided. The staff of the laboratory for man fertility and of the genetic institute are involved also in the process.

The services of the unit include:

 

v Defining the problem of infertility and deciding the diagnostic pathway.

v Diagnostic tests: sperm examination for quantity, quality and motility, radiological and ultrasound imaging, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy when needed and fallopian tube catheterization.

v Deciding the type of fertilization:

v IVF (in vitro fertilization), ICSI (micromanipulation), TESA/E (sperm aspiration from the testes), assisted hatching, Pipelle, return of fertilized oocytes (fetus) to the fallopian tubes (ZIFT), blastocytes, oocytes retrieval and freezing, oocytes donation, and others.

v Test for retinol binding protein 4 level in case of polycystic ovaries.

v Integrating approach for women with recurrent failure of IVF.

 

The fertility clinic is located in building No 400 – main corridor and the laboratory for IVF is located near the surgical daycare where the whole process of IVF is done.

 

Research activity

The medical staff of the IVF unit is very active in research. Here are some of the projects:

 

v Comparison between method of selection of sperms for micromanipulation by an optic device that allows inspection of the sperms under high magnitude, and selection of the sperms using the standard method.

v Characterization of the androgenic and inflammatory profile during ovulation and the luteal phase in women undergoing IVF.

v The connection between molarian anomalies, hearing disturbances and mutations in gene connexin 26.

v The influence of gravity on the success rate of IVF.

v The influence of methotrexate therapy in cases of extra uterine pregnancy on the results of IVF cycles.

v Induction of ovulation with the chronic ultra-low dose protocol in women with polycystic ovaries.

v The influence of day 3 FSH/LH ratio on the results of IVF.
