The aim of interventional cardiology is to diagnose and to treat diseases of the coronary arteries (acute thrombosis and stenosis), diseases of the cardiac valves and inborn defects of the atrial and ventricular septum. Cardiac catheterization is the accurate method to detect coronary artery stenosis.
When a patient is diagnosed as having acute myocardial event, emergency coronary catheterization, coronary angioplasty and/or stent installation are critical for the salvage of the myocardium. The interventional cardiology unit at the Barzilai medical center is one of the leading units in Israel in treating acute myocardial infarction within 90 minutes from diagnosis, thus minimizing the myocardial necrotic area. Following coronary intervention procedures, the patient is usually referred to cardiac rehabilitation.
Lately, valvuloplasty, annuloplasty, replacement of the mitral and tricuspid valve and closure of atrial septal defect have been done in our hospital by cardiac catheterization.
