Cardiac scanning is done using the gated spect with the isotope Tc-99m-MIBI. Cardiac scanning is another non-invasive method to evaluate the blood flow through the coronary arteries during rest and following exercise. The technician applies electrodes of cardiac monitor, the doctor injects the isotope intravenously, the heart is scanned, and then the patient is asked to walk on the treadmill. The velocity of the treadmill is increased until the patient reaches the goal pulse rate or stopped when the patient feels chest pain. The scan is repeated to discover any abnormalities of the myocardial muscle uptake of the radioactive substance and repeated again after rest.
If the patient cannot perform stress, then the test will be performed using a drug, usually dipyridamole, which can detect any irregularities in the flow of the blood to the heart.
Dobutamine, a cardiac stimulator, is rarely used specially in patients with respiratory disease who cannot perform exercise and have contraindications to vasodilators.
The patient should be fasting 4 hours before the test.
Pregnant women are not allowed to perform this type of cardiac evaluation.
