Guidance for feeding the premature baby in the neonatal and premature intensive care unit

Signs of readiness for mouth feeding of the premature:

Premature baby are usually ready for feeding when they are 33 weeks after birth. You can observe signs that the baby is trying to suck.

Sensory-motor preparation for mouth feeding:

Wake the baby gradually and gently.

Lift the baby with a cover, his hands near his face.

Hold him in a semi sitting position while supporting his head and back.

Put your finger or a baby pacifier to stimulate sucking.

Let him touch the nipple with his mouth.

Exercising before feeding through nasogastric tube: External stimulation of the cheeks, lips and chin with the fingers; stimulation of the tongue and the gums; stimulation with a baby pacifier while feeding through NG tube.

Watch his color, his pulse rate and his oxygen saturation.

If the baby starts sucking in a rapid manner then stop for a while.

Do not force your baby to suck. Try to change his position or cradle him. If it does not work, do not force him. Try again on the next feeding time.

Be patient.
